Mom's Matter and Thumbodys Loves You

Mother's Day is this Sunday which means we needed to make something sweet for our moms!

I don't have any kiddos of my very own yet, but I do have my very own  mom who I love very much! Here she is above :)

We are finishing up a fun unit on Matter! I teach at a Core Knowledge school and make up all my own Science and Social Studies units. Matter is always my favorite because it’s SO hands on!  So far we have played with water balloons, soda, ice, and more. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I decided to mix Matter with a cute idea for our moms. We’ve been talking about the changes in states of matter and how temperature can effect them. Then I found an idea on Lansdowne Life where you can melt crayons into candy molds and decided to give it a try. We had the same issue with the sides curling that Erin described in her post, but it didn't stop us from making 22 crayons.

First, we broke our crayons {as a solid} into small pieces.  Then, we put them in the molds inside of my crock pot and observed what happened when we added them as heat. {turn to liquid} And then let them cool down again in the fridge. {became a solid again} They wanted to do this again and again! It was a very cool lesson and made mother’s day gifts in the process. It was a win win! Then we wrote cards for our mom’s to give them along with our crayons. You can download your copy for free at the end of this post.

Last year, when I was just starting out as a teacher, I helped the kids create these. I made the flower pot by hand using black construction paper. I also have the kids trace over the stems with a green crayon. I set out a variety of paints and the kids pick whichever colors they want for thumb print flowers.Once they have written their letters I will place it behind the flower pot and laminate them together.

For both parts of this project I use card stock in lieu of regular paper to help with durability. If you would like a copy click of Mom Matters and the Thumbody Loves you Activity click here the {{TEMPLATES}}  and here {{HEARTS}} for the file with the mom hearts. There is also a page of blank hearts if you have a kiddo who needs to write to a step parent that they refer to by first name, grandma, or other guardian.

If you use I only ask that you please leave some comment love :)
Enjoy!!
